Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Welcome to GenSnippets (“we,” “our,” or “us”). We are committed to protecting your privacy. GenSnippets is a free, open-source macOS application that stores all data locally on your device.

This Privacy Policy describes how the application handles your data. By using GenSnippets, you agree to the terms outlined in this policy.

2. Data Storage

GenSnippets is designed with a local-first approach:

  • All snippets and shortcuts are stored locally on your Mac.
  • No account required — no email, no password, no sign-up.
  • No cloud sync — your data never leaves your device.
  • No telemetry or analytics collected by the app itself.

3. Information We Do NOT Collect

GenSnippets does not collect, transmit, or store any of the following:

  • Personal information (name, email, phone number)
  • Keystrokes or typing patterns
  • Snippet content or shortcut data
  • Device identifiers or IP addresses
  • Usage analytics or crash reports

To expand your snippets, the app reads what you type on your Mac — that is why it needs Accessibility permission. It keeps at most the last 50 characters in memory, clears them after 15 seconds without typing, and never saves them or sends them anywhere.

The only network requests the app makes are update checks, described below.

4. Software Updates

GenSnippets keeps itself up to date with the open-source Sparkle framework:

  • About once a day, it downloads a small update feed (appcast.xml) from GitHub.
  • When a new version is available and you choose to install it, the update is downloaded from GitHub Releases.
  • These requests carry only what any web request carries: your IP address, plus the app’s name and version. They never include your snippets or anything you type, and no system profile is sent.

GitHub handles these requests under the GitHub Privacy Statement. To turn off automatic checks, quit GenSnippets and run defaults write Jay8448.Gen-Snippets SUEnableAutomaticChecks -bool false in Terminal.

5. Our Website

Our website (gensnippets.lifelonglearning.dev) uses privacy-friendly analytics to understand page visits:

  • Umami Analytics — privacy-focused, no cookies, no personal data collected.
  • Microsoft Clarity — session recordings and heatmaps to improve the website experience. Clarity may use cookies.

These analytics apply only to the website, not to the GenSnippets application itself.

The site also loads the GitHub star count and the latest release details straight from GitHub’s public API, so GitHub receives those requests from your browser.

6. Open Source

GenSnippets is 100% open source. You can review the complete source code on GitHub to verify our privacy practices. We welcome contributions and security audits from the community.

7. Your Rights & Data Control

Since all data is stored locally on your device, you have full control:

  • Create, edit, or delete any snippets at any time within the app.
  • Moving the app to the Trash does not delete your data. To remove everything, quit the app, then delete ~/Library/Preferences/Jay8448.Gen-Snippets.plist (snippets, categories and settings) and the ~/Library/Application Support/GenSnippets folder (images and files in your snippets).
  • No data deletion request needed — you own and control everything.

8. Children's Privacy

GenSnippets is suitable for users of all ages. Since no personal data is collected, there are no age-related privacy concerns.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Since GenSnippets collects no data, policy changes are unlikely to affect your privacy.
