Why does macOS warn me the first time I open it?

GenSnippets isn't notarized by Apple yet, so Gatekeeper blocks the first launch. Allow it once in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway — the download page walks you through it.

Does it update itself?

Yes. Once installed, GenSnippets checks for new versions in the background and offers to install them.
